We walked past this so often and thought little of the inconspicuous Polpo on Cowcross Street, Farringdon. Went in there for martinis a couple of weeks ago, then returned for food recently.
Can’t book here, so we turned up at about 8 and had to wait 45 minutes in the cosy Negroni Bar downstairs which was no great inconvenience. Nice atmosphere in the bar and the martinis are decent. Mine, cucumber and basil. Hers, something with elderflower, I cant remember.
The restaurant upstairs is bustling and full of energy, always something to catch your eye whether it be another diner or the quirky decor.
We shared arancini, potato & parmesan crocchette, tenderstem brocoli, chilli & garlic pizzette, spicy pork & fennel meatballs, duck, blood orange & fennel salad, and pork belly, radicchio & hazelnuts.
Arancini was tasty, interestingly flavoured and a decent size. Crocchette were unremarkable but inoffensive. Pizzette was good, though we wish we had ordered the artichoke one on special. Meatballs were brilliant, well cooked with a subtle hint of fennel. Duck salad was hearty and a generous portion given the relatively low price. The pork belly was outstanding. Cooked to perfection and full of flavour, the hazelnuts added something interesting and a bit of texture to a rather ‘soft’ plate of food.
A decent tiramisu finished off the meal.
Will definitely return to cross off a few more dishes from the menu.
